Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna

Located on Vienna’s elegant Stubenring, the MAK, or Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst, is a museum dedicated to arts, crafts and design. We worked with their MAK Design Shop to design and make a unique notebook, focusing on the area’s architecture.

Each notebook has been hand-pressed with a metal plate. They have been bound in Holland using a specialist technique known as ‘OTA’ or ‘lay-flat’ binding. This method allows the book to lie completely flat when opened. Thus maximising the writing area.

Both the Schwarz and Weiß notebook are made from Colorplan Ebony and China White respectively, from G.F Smith. The inside pages are Munken. A specialist paper named after Munkedal, Sweden, the town where it is made. The notebooks all have 144pp 100gsm pages.

Architectural icons of Vienna’s Stubenring are inscribed onto the cover. These include buildings like the Vienna State Opera House, and the MAK building itself. The MAK Design Shop is housed within the museum.

The notebook duo is available from April 25th 2018 onwards, exclusively from the MAK Design Shop. When you enter through the main doors, the beautiful, modern shop is located on the left hand-side.
