St Paul’s Cathedral

The City Works collaborated with the St Paul’s Cathedral Shop to design and make a striking, bold, beautiful paper collection, all based around the incredible architecture of Sir Christopher Wren.

Born in 1632, Sir Christopher Wren is a revered English architect. Credited for his work after the Great Fire of London, Wren built many churches including his finest work, St Paul’s Cathedral. Despite working so many centuries ago, so much of his incredible architecture still stands proud today.

At the centre of the city of London and at the heart of his portfolio, the St Paul’s Cathedral is a magnificent domed church. The building itself has been present in London’s skyline long before it took on the iconic appearance from Wren’s designs.

Situated in the courtyard, the charming and recently refurbished St Paul’s Cathedral Shop is home to a variety of books, gifts and souvenirs for every walk of life. We were delighted to collaborate with the team on a bespoke stationery project.

In our trademark intricate style, we developed two bespoke designs for two different formats, both of which featuring the many works of Wren. A greetings card, postcard and notebook design used one format, while the other design informed a larger A3 colour-in print.

All in all, the tapestry of Wren-era architecture included St Paul’s, the Temple Bar, the Monument, St Mary Le Bow, Fountain Court, Hampton Court Palace, St Nicholas Abbey, the Old Royal Naval College, Kensington Palace and Greenwich Observatory.

To discover so much incredible architecture dotted throughout London was incredibly inspiring, and it was a pleasure to revisit these ancient landmarks, and give them a new lease of life in our modern, geometric style.

To further add a modern touch to the collection, each item is produced in a striking two-tone colour-way of electric orange and royal blue. It’s a departure from previous palettes we used, and when put together the eye-catching combination works very well.

The entire collection will be available from the St Paul’s Cathedral Shop from March 2017 onwards. Please do take a closer look if you plan on visiting in the future.
